Tip for a successful story: Your story should have a beginning, middle and a satisfying ending. Show us, don't tell us your story. Instead of telling us, I was a good shot. Show us: From my back porch, I picked off any grasshopper that dared light in Mom's tomato patch. Use strong verbs and nouns to create a vivid image: Bad guys feared me and my Daisy. I swaggered down behind the barn with my Red Ryder BB gun, hunting the copperhead that attacked my collie, Duke. Try to give us something from all five senses. We want to hear, smell, touch, taste and see your story. Make us feel we're in the story with you. Grandpa pulled a Royal Crown Cola from the ice-packed stock tank and flipped a dime to the man at the concession stand. I guzzled down a big gulp, and the sticky liquid spilled out both sides of my mouth. We walked through a cloud of steam from grilling burgers toward the sounds of pings and clanks from the shooting gallery. "Let's see if you've been practicing," Grandpa said. Make sure you introduce your characters. Let us know how old they are and where your story takes place. Tell your story in 500-2000 words. We accept via regular mail, typed on plain white 8 1/2 x 11 paper, in 12-point Times New Roman font. Deadline March 31, 2009.
