| They didn't just pick the names of the sailors out of a hat. Each one actually means something.
sailor moon's name | In the English dub, Sailor Moon's name is Serena. Serena sounds strikingly similar to Selene, the goddess of the moon in Greek mythology. So, my theory is, that's how DiC (the first company to dub Sailor Moon into English) chose the name. Or, doubtfully, it could be pure coincidence. In the English manga, her name is Bunny. They say that, if you look at the moon when it's full, you might be able to make out the shape of a bunny. Here's more information about it. Also, Sailor Moon's original Japanese name (in both the anime and manga) is Usagi, which is Japanese for "bunny". And lastly, Serenity. That's the name Sailor Moon had while she was princess of the moon, and when she becomes Neo Queen Serenity of Crystal Tokyo. On the moon, there's a place called "The Sea of Serenity", so that name may have been derived from that. |
